At the heart of the IB educational philosophy are the Approaches to Learning (ATL). These are skills and attitudes that empower learners to become more self-directed and reflective. By cultivating a deep understanding of the ATL, students develop the skills and habits of mind that will help them thrive in school, in their careers, and in their personal lives.
To help students develop these essential skills, we are excited to introduce our new resource – a set of posters that showcase the development of the ATL across the PYP, MYP, and DP. With illustrative examples, these posters demonstrate what it looks like for learners to learn how to learn across the continuum.
How to use these posters:
- Goal setting: Use these posters as a provocation for discussing skill-related goals throughout your unit. Ground goals in what students value and care about.
- Explaining the programmes to families: Use this poster set to explain the importance of ATL and the development of skills across the continuum to families.
- Develop your school continuum: Use these posters to initiate conversations around skill building across grade levels. Invite mixed grade level teams to discuss what the development of skills might look like from year to year, and across the continuum.
