In today’s demanding educational environment, the wellbeing of school leaders and educators is not just important—it’s essential for the success of Australian schools.

But, how can principals integrate comprehensive wellbeing strategies into their own lives and school culture? And what practical steps can educators take to maintain a healthy balance between work and their own wellbeing?

Featuring sessions led by Pasi Sahlberg and Amy Green, this free, online event invites school leaders and educators to explore effective wellbeing strategies and discover tools needed to tackle burnout and enhance vitality. Join us to engage in workshops designed to empower and rejuvenate Australia’s educational professionals.

Session 1

Synopsis: Leading learning and wellbeing in schools

15:30 – 16:15 AEST (45 minutes)

Australian school leaders are currently facing unprecedented challenges in maintaining their wellbeing, with a staggering 47.8% reporting “red flag” levels of stress and burnout. At the same time there is growing pressure to improve student attendance and achievement in schools. This session, led by professor Pasi Sahlberg, focuses on the state of Australian schools in light of the Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Survey 2022.

Pasi Sahlberg

Professor of Education Leadership, University of Melbourne

Pasi is Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Melbourne. His previous work in Finland includes classroom teaching in Helsinki Normal Lyceum, teacher education in the University of Helsinki, and Director General at Finland’s Ministry of Education. He has worked at the World Bank, European Commission, and as visiting professor at Harvard University. He works with teachers, schools, education systems, and governments in understanding teaching, learning and educational transformation. Pasi is a recipient of the 2012 Education Award in Finland, the 2013 Grawemeyer Award in the U.S., the 2016 Lego Prize in Denmark, and the 2021 Hedley Beare Award in Australia. Amy Green

Speaker, Trainer, Facilitator, and Coach, The Wellness Strategy

Amy is founder of The Wellness Strategy, a published author, speaker, facilitator, and coach, and a leader in improving workplace culture and wellbeing in schools and organisations. As a past teacher and school leader, Amy is determined to change the way we view wellbeing to support our everyday and workplace needs. With a background in teaching and leadership and having studied human behaviour and positive psychology, Amy brings to the wellbeing space a fresh approach to what can be a sensitive topic.

Amy guides workplaces to understand the difference between individual and collective wellbeing to ensure all employees feel safe, valued, and fulfilled, and to bring about a workplace culture in which all staff thrive and flourish.

Melissa O’Shea

Former School Leader, Growth at Toddle

Melissa is Head of Teaching and Learning at Trinity Lutheran College on the Gold Coast, Australia. She has been a curriculum leader at Trinity for the past 7 years. With over 23 years' experience in education, 17 in the IB community, Melissa is passionate about inquiry-based learning, universal design for learning and collaborating with other educators to support student growth. She is currently studying a Masters of Neuroscience and Education.
